graphic novel
Graphic novels are literally story books comprised of pictures. It's the English equivalent of a Japanese "manga tankoubon" or comic book collection. In North America, the word "comic" tends to have certain connotations especially for either the strip form or the "Spiderman" style 20 (or so) page monthly comic stories. However, Japanese manga volumes (collected in tankoubon) are usually about 180 pages and contain much more story (obviously given the page count). While graphic novels can contain graphic nudity or violence, the term itself doesn't mean that it will.
