kanji
One of three writing systems used in Japan, kanji is a pictographic form of writing taught in Japan, originally adopted from the Chinese. A minimum understanding of about 2000 kanji characters is required as a basic level of literacy in Japan. Kanji characters can have multiple interpretations of how they are pronounced, depending on where it appears within a specific word. Quite often, an unusual or difficult form of kanji writing will have with it, the equivalent phonetic spelling in hiragana to aid the reader.
