A way of fishing using live cormorant birds. During the summer months, boats equipped with lanterns will head out on the rivers at night with a flock of trained cormorants. The fish (ayu, or sweet fish) are attracted to the boat lanterns, and the cormorants pluck them out of the water. The birds' collars are just large enough for their throats, so they are unable to swallow the fish.
