To be honest, I was a bit surprised to see this title come out at Number One, until I thought about everything that was good about this absolutely heartbreaking story. Even the most jaded and cynical viewer will pick up on the masterful cinematography employed in this feature; every scene, lyric, and pan is carefully crafted to achieve maximum impact -- and what an impact it delivers. Rather than preach at you regarding the horrors of war, Grave of the Fireflies instead simply presents its case in haunting detail, leaving you with more questions than answers.
T.H.E.M. Anime Reviews:
Grave of the Fireflies

This is anime with a purpose. No punches pulled, no extraneous frames, this is a movie that proves once and for all, anime is not just Saturday morning cartoons. Beautifully rendered, and painfully real to watch, this is a show that takes on that most terrifying of events -- war -- and tackles it from a human perspective. This is a movie that will leave you emotionally devasted, and etch itself into your memories for years to come.
