tennou tanjoubi

The Emperor's birthday. From tennou (emperor) and tanjoubi (birthday). This is a national holiday in Japan, and one of the very few times that the public is permitted onto the Imperial Palace grounds.
The current Emperor of Japan is Akihito, whose birthday is on December 23rd. The previous Emperor, Hirohito, was so beloved by the country that his birthday is still celebrated as "Greenery Day" (Midori no Hi) on April 29th. The late Emperor Hirohito was an avid botanist.
