[ plot summary ]

Hatta and Komatsu decide that Kyosuke needs to get out to a special place -- a fast-food hamburger restaurant. Only this one features waitresses in spandex, and an observation lounge attached to an aerobics studio, and guess who's working out there? No, it's not Madoka, but Kurumi, Manami and Hikaru! Komatsu tries to convince Kyosuke to go to the disco Möbius, (with the twins in tow of course) and give him three tickets. Kyosuke, playing the concerned older brother, sits down with Manami and Kurumi to make sure that they don't go to any place that would not be considered "proper." Kurumi, of course, discovers the free tickets, and against her brother's admonishments, goes anyways. Kyosuke and Manami surmise what has happened, and set out to collect her. Guess who Kyosuke runs into (literally) at Disco Möbius? Hikaru and Madoka! Unwittingly, Kyosuke agrees to go out on a date with Hikaru at a local park...

[ capsule review ]

In this episode, we begin to see the situational misunderstandings that develop in the Madoka/Kyosuke/Hikaru love triangle. Kyosuke's uncertainty sets him up into a date that he really doesn't want to be in, but he doesn't really know what he wants, either. Madoka is obviously attracted to Kyosuke, but she's not really willing to admit this to herself, either. Sounds like the same type of fun I had when I started dating -- the uncertainty and fear of rejection and/or fear of hurting other people's feelings can be very daunting. The idea of growing up as a "proper" (majime) young adult may seem a bit alien in our western culture; I wonder if the screenwriters are living out their rebellious side in the script... (We get an idea of what Kyosuke's upbringing is like when he spies Madoka having a drink... It's bad enough that she smokes!) Kyosuke's date with Hikaru unintentionally turns into more of a date with Madoka; of course Kyosuke wouldn't Kyosuke if he didn't mess this up, too... Hikaru lets him know exactly how she feels about being stood up by her "little" announcement on the park bulletin board! We also see a change happening in Madoka at the end of the episode, when she decides to light up... I find the moodiness and characterisations of the series very compelling. - AN

The story continues to progress with Kyosuke beginning to like Madoka a lot, and with Hikaru admiring Kyosuke and wanting to spend time with him. We also see Madoka beginning to like Kyosuke. The beginning of our love triangle between the three of them. Again the story here is nothing special although we do get an idea of just how much food Kurumi and Manami can eat. Kyosuke's liking of Madoka propels him to do things that he would not have really thought of doing before, like save a kid who just fell in the water. We also get an idea of just how stupid Kyosuke can be when he accidentally lets slip to Madoka that he was supposed to be on a date with Hikaru. Not the swiftest of things to say to a girl that you like! Again the music continues to be very good and enjoyable as is this episode. -JYN
